TikTok is no longer an app solely for dance trends and lip-syncing but is overflowing with hacks and how-tos for anyone willing to try them.

The app announced back in February that just the U.S. alone has over 150 million active TikTok users, many of which are Black creators sharing their ‘Black hacks’ or favorite tips for anything from wigs to weight loss.

See some hair tips and tricks below.

One user took to TikTok to share a tip for an everyday problem wig wearers encounter: over-bleaching a lace-front wig. Instead of dealing with messy dye or risk damaging the piece, a quick fix requires a tube of old mascara. Grab a tube that matches the color of your wig and run it through the partition, creating hair-like strokes that blend perfectly into the hair. Check her video on how to fine-tune your technique.

Can’t make it to the beauty supply in time? This trick helps your gel last longer, all by simply adding water. This user showed her gel tripling in volume after she added a couple of tablespoons of water.

It should be noted that this hack works best on water-based gels and may affect the hold of the gel by thinning the consistency. However, users all over TikTok hit the like button on this tip.

Calling all hot comb lovers! This may not be a hack to you, but for anyone intimidated or inexperienced with a hot comb, this trick may make you comfortable for getting your roots to lie flat for a smooth silk press.

She starts by spraying her client’s hair with heat protectant. She then emphasized that the heat on a hot comb is primarily coming from the edge, not the teeth, instructing that’s what you should direct towards roots. Using a good grip, she slightly angled the hot comb from the root out, focusing the edge’s heat on the base of the hair for that silky, shiny finish. Always be careful when using heated styling products, as the burn can be unforgiving.

This curly-haired content creator shared her method for applying beads to the ends of her braids without a beading tool. @andreawiththecurls begins by looping one side of the bobby pin through the end of her braid. Next, she puts her desired beads on the bobby pin. Finally, she tugs on the exposed end, slipping the looped hair through and leaving her with an embellished braid. It’s as easy as 1-2-3!

The Y2K trend of claw clips is back with a vengeance, filling up our feeds and ‘For You’ pages. However, many Black women with curly or coily hair have struggled with using them as they can get tangled.

As @thecurlybeviie shared, this popular updo does not have to be just for straight hair. She references @aprilfools44’s original video tutorial, where the creator started by simply tying her hair into a medium-to-low ponytail, leaving a section out in the front. Then, she slicked back the front area into a hidden ponytail underneath that could then be used to attach the clip.

Ever wonder how some get their silk presses to last weeks, even a month a time? This creator shared how easy it is to achieve the everlasting blowout. She took a greasy strand of hair and showed how she revived it using dry shampoo.

First, lightly concentrating it on the root, then coating it on the rest of the hair, she evenly combs the product through. She then styles her hair with a heat tool and finishes with hairspray to conceal any white cast. Now, you have a revived and refreshed blowout.
