I’m a hairdresser and here’s my 5 top tips for luscious locks

Aug 24, 2023

A HAIRDRESSER has revealed her top five tips for hair health - and one of them might just help you grow it quicker.

A stylist at luxury salon Emmie Hair has laid out the facts, from how you should use shampoo to the best way to comb your strands.

The haircare pointers were laid out in an informative TikTok video, and were as follows:

The first tip was to only scrub your scalp and roots when shampooing your head.

This is because your hair gets mostly dirty at the roots due to a build up of oil, sebum and styling products.

Hairdressers say that the shampoo washes the lengths as it runs down them.

However, if you regularly use styling products on your lengths, then it’s worth shampooing them at times too.

The stylist at Emmie Hair in Perth, Scotland, advised to always comb your hair by starting at the ends and working your way up.

This method allows you to gently tease out any tangles or knots without damaging your strands.

What’s more, it’s pretty painful to start combing your hair at the top, particularly if you’ve got thicker hair or any hidden knots.

The third tip was to “apply hair serum to your ends every day” to eradicate any frizz.

Hairdressers at L'Oréal Professionnel are big advocates of using serum daily, too.

Bosses said: “Hair serum is a liquid-based treatment usually formulated using silicones that provide a protective layer over the hair fibre, assisting in smoothing frizz.

“This smooth layer then reflects the light, which is how serum gives your hair a shiny, not greasy, finish.”

The hair whizz at Emmie Hair also warned against using hair tools above 200 degrees.

This is because the hotter the straightener or the curler, the more damage it can do to your hair.

It’s better to style your locks on a cooler heat with more intentional tool placement to prevent unnecessary breakage… or in worst cases, frazzling your ends.

The fifth and final tip was to get your ends trimmed regularly - but the relevance of this left some viewers of the video stunned.

“If your ends are damaged, they are going to break at some point and won't grow past it,” a hair whizz explained in the comments.

“Your hair will grow from the roots but it will be stuck to the same length.

“If you don't cut it, it will go higher and you will get an uneven cut because the hair will keep breaking off and become thinner.”
